Phyang village spans over five hundred and fifty hectares of land. It is located around 20kms from Leh in Ladakh. The vernacular architecture of the houses were studied there along with the physical documentation. The scope of study included the climatic aspects, the construction methodology and detailing, socio- cultural dynamics, occupation and lifestyle, oral and documented history, social aspirations of the community. Like any other region that boasts of a rich vernacular heritage, Ladakh has demonstrated a sustainable co-existence, over many centuries.

Due to the varied geology, the natural material use depended on the regional availability, thus leading to variations in the building process. Stone and mud being abundantly available have been the core building materials. Being a cold desert very limited species of flora grew, making its use very minimal in the building typology. This idea of building with local resources using ancient building methods was reflected as a learning to take forward to build in Ladakh. This culminated into an exhibition and publication documenting the life, culture, settlement and houses of Phyang village.
